Ian And Barbara Alexander

Ian and Barbara bought their first Doberman over 30 years ago following a break-in at their then new home. They thought they had bought a pet quality dog but were talked into showing by the breeder. They found the new hobby interested their family and after a couple of years purchased a show quality bitch from the same breeder.

“Lisa” and her 2 litter sisters dominated in the show ring for some years. The family  decided to breed her to the then new import dog Marks Tey Yancey. That breeding was repeated and produced 10 champions, 5 of them Best in Show winners and so Walamara Kennels was born. They are located about 100 miles from Melbourne in the State of Victoria, in a rural area.

Since then most of the family have been involved in the dog world. Glenys, the daughter is licensed to judge all breeds except the Herding group and has judged in all States of Australia, New Zealand and the USA. David handled and is now Research Manager of a major pet food company. Greg also handled and now has his own auto business so his time is limited.

The family breeds, trains and show their own dogs as professional handlers are almost unknown in Australia.

So far they have produced over 100 title holders, many owned by others but some also handled by the family. These titles include Australian Champions, Australian Grand Champions, New Zealand Champions, Singapore and Indian Champions. Many of their dogs have achieved obedience titles such as CD, CDX and UD, handled by their owners, as the family is too busy to take on obedience as well.

The Alexanders’ are also heavily involved in clubs. Ian is president of their State Dobe Club (one of 6 in Australia) and is Chairman of the National Dobermann Council (Australia). Barbara is Show Secretary of the State Dobe Club and both are involved in local clubs.

Most years, for the last 15 years, they have been at the DPCA Nationals and Ian Judged Veteran Sweeps at Fitchburg in 1999. They say they come to learn and see but fell they never stop learning.
