Synopsis, Dr. Sharon Gwaltney-Brant:
Cancer is the result of interplay of a wide variety of factors, including genetics, nutrition and environment. This seminar will discuss the current understanding of the various environmental factors that are suspected to be or have been associated with cancer in dogs.
Synopsis, Dr. Mark Neff:
The Van Andel Research Institute, with a grant from the National Institutes of Health, recently launched a new center of excellence in canine genetics and genomics. Its first and most important program is the Canine Hereditary Cancer Consortium (CHCC), an unprecedented alliance of scientists, veterinarians and physicians. The focus of the CHCC is on the study of samples from canine cancer patients in order to identify genes responsible for breed-associated cancers with a goal of developing more precise diagnostics and therapeutics. The initial cancers under research are hemangiosarcoma, osteosarcoma, lymphoma, malignant histiocytosis and melanoma.
The Top Dog Program at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) is working in collaboration with the Van Andel Research Institute and CHCC to apply recent advances in canine genetics to accelerate investigation into the basis of inherited canine diseases. Besides cancer, researchers with TGen are interested in studying two Doberman diseases, "wobblers" and dilated cardiomyopathy.
In addition to mapping genes that might be involved in breed associated conditions, the research team intends to implement veterinary clinical trials to assess the effectiveness of new diagnostics and therapeutics. Between the two institutes there is presently the funding, technological infrastructure, and a collective scientific expertise to enable the rapid completion of genetic research projects.
Dr. Neff will speak on unique biological attributes of the Doberman and discuss the above research projects with an emphasis on CHCC investigations into the genetics of breed-based cancer susceptibilities. In addition, he will discuss issues regarding wobblers and dilated cardiomyopathy and research into their underlying genetics and the development of tools for earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment.
Free DNA Collection Clinic [top]
The DPCA is planning a blood draw at the National on Tuesday and Wednesday October 5 & 6, 2010.
Hours are 10-12:30 AM and 2-4:30 PM Tues and Wed. With enough volunteers we may be able to include Thursday as well. We will be located at ringside in our own DPCA/CHIC booth this year. It is very exciting to be visible in order to explain the CHIC program and the importance of the CHIC program.
Please come and help support Doberman Pinscher Health Research by participating in the FREE DNA Collection Clinic at this year’s National generously funded by the DPCA. This blood will be placed in the CHIC Repository DNA bank for Doberman research stored at the University of Missouri.
Participating Doberman owners will be required to fill out an “Application for DNA Repository” (DPCA DNA Collection Clinic) as well as a “CHIC DNA Repository Health Survey”. Please go to offa.org to download. Please bring the completed forms with you to expedite the process. Please include the dog’s AKC registered name and number as well as the call name.
All Dobermans are welcome, however if you have placed a DNA sample in the bank we do not need the same dog again. Please bring another one.
Everyone who brings a dog for collection will be entered in the “Basket of Goodies” draw. All donations will be appreciated. Either send items to the hotel to hold for me or bring articles to give to me by Monday October 4.
This year we have a brand new children’s book about Dobermans. “The Gift of a Lifetime” written by Aunty Moose will be some of our prizes.
We also will offer copies for sale at a nominal price with all proceeds to be donated to DPCA for health.
We GIVE everyone who brings a dog a ticket. Last year was a lot of fun as we had enough donations that about 20 people went home with a Goodie. Hopefully we can send more people home with a Goodie this year!
I would like to ask for volunteers with donations of their time
to man the booth, look up pedigrees, draw blood, hold dogs, donate
supplies and Goodie Baskets and sometimes just go get needed items.
With the help of each and every one of you we will succeed in
finding the path to healthier dogs.
