Artist Harold Roe’s unique perspective on wildlife shines through vividly in his naturalistic paintings.  A naturalist, outdoorsman and former navy seaman, Harold developed a keen eye for recreating animals and their habitats on canvas during his extensive travels through wilderness areas in Canada, Alaska, Africa and Australia where he observed many of his most striking subjects firsthand.  His artful renderings capture both the beauty and drama of the natural world as it unfolds in a variety of habitats.

Educated as an architect, Mr. Roe practiced as a principal in his own firm.  In 1967 he became the art director of a nationally recognized architectural illustration firm.  In 1973 Harold became inspired by the powerful beauty and free spirit possessed by birds, and focused his creative talents towards recording these unusual characteristics in the form of accurately detailed paintings.  Traveling extensively throughout wilderness areas in Canada, Alaska, Africa and Australia, Harold brings a rich flavor to the intimate details of the habitat and personality of the wildlife he illustrates.

Harold Roe is a life sponsor of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. and serves as an Honorary National Trustee.  This private, non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of wetland habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife named Harold their International Artist of the Year in 1985 and again in 1998.  In addition to receiving many awards from this organization, he has raised in excess of 15 million dollars for Ducks Unlimited through the sale of his prints.  His work has been published nationally in Ducks Unlimited magazine, as well as numerous other national publications.

Harold is the only 4 time winner in the Ohio Wetlands Habitat Stamp competition (1984, 1987, 1996 and 1998), and has been a finalist many times in the federal duck stamp competition.

Inspired by the bond between human and canine, he began painting dogs in 1995.  Many of his subjects have been hunting dogs, but the beauty and elegance of his daughter’s two Dobermans captured his imagination and he painted Proud Pair as a surprise gift for her.

These two red Dobermans are Manorie Dobe’s Gold Rush WAC (Goldie), and Manorie Dobe’s Golden Legacy WAC (Travis).  They are mother and son and are owned, loved and spoiled by Rebecca and Jeff Zaun of Sylvania, Ohio.
