After the tornado’s hit last week in the South, I asked two of our DPCA members, Joan Mc Daniels (CA) and Susan Lathrop (OK) if they had time to volunteer and were willing to contact DPCA members in the southern states affected by the severe weather. We had many offers of kennel space/homes from DPCA members if anyone else needed help. Thank you to Joan and Susan for checking with our members and reporting that they were all safe. This is their report below.

=======================================================
Dear Jan,
Over the course of several days my helper, Susan Lathrop, and I spent many hours telephoning DPCA members in the storm ravaged areas in the South checking on their welfare. We heard their stories and shared their pain. Fortunately, of all the people we talked to nobody was injured nor were their dogs.
There were people in Alabama who were without power for 6 days. I talked with folks in Tennessee who had damage to their homes and cars because of hail.
One of the things that impressed both Susan and myself was the concern the people had for each other and the offers of help from those who were able. There were members driving to check on other members. Gasoline became a problem in the areas that were without power. People got together and fired up their grills to cook on and shared with their friends and neighbors.
As I reflected each night on the stories I heard that day I felt such a sense of relief that everyone was okay. I was told of one family who took their dogs and went in underneath their house in the crawl space to wait out the storm. Another family hid with their dogs in a small room deep inside their home. The husband said he now knew what being in a crate was like. LOL A couple of people came out after the tornado to find some of their friends had been killed.
We did the states of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee.

March 12th, 2011 | Tags: members | Category: In the news, President's Message News Flash! Hiroko Lee, DPCA International Chair has been in touch with our members and friends in Japan after the devastating earthquake and tsunami this week. She is happy to report that everyone is safe, very shaken but safe. And more good news, all our DPCA members and friends in Hawaii are unharmed from the tsunami caused by the earthquake in Japan. All members of DPCA are wishing for their continued safety and our thoughts are with them during this uncertain time.

It is with deep sadness I must announce that long time DPCA member Howard Kidwell passed away today from a massive heart attack. His wife Sue has requested in lieu of flowers, a donation in Howard’s name be given to the SND-Senior Doberman Medical and Senior Project. These were
projects that Howard supported for years. Howard’s presence in “all things Doberman” will be sorely missed.
Send donations in Howard Kidwell’s name to:

October 20th, 2009 | Category: AKC, President's Message Dear DPCA Members,
The intent of the AKC Parent Club archives is to insure that irreplaceable artifacts and documents are preserved in perpetuity, and not lost or destroyed over time. It is in no way meant to limit the DPCA’s access to or use of this material. To have our archives stored at someone’s home or a storage unit somewhere is not the way our archives should be preserved and it limits our members the opportunity to access them.
If the DPCA wishes to have a reasonable amount of material in the archive shipped for display at its National Specialty and later shipped back, at our expense, AKC will accommodate that and we have it in writing. The only contingency would be that AKC is not responsible for the material, if lost, stolen, or damaged in shipping, or while out of AKC’s possession. The DPCA archivist will select items every year for display at our National and they will be shipped by AKC to our National site, just as we do now.
The other question that was raised was obtaining duplicates of DVDs, particularly if our club isn’t able to make duplicates before the transfer. This type of request is part of the AKC complimentary reference service. Research may be conducted by Norma Blake Archivist and photocopies made at no cost. If we prefer to conduct research ourselves, make copies, or view the collection at any time, we may do so during normal business hours.
In terms of the logistics, our club is responsible for gathering and boxing the collection and shipping to AKC in care of Norma Blake’s office. 100% of the shipping expense is reimbursed.
The collection is quite large, well over 150 file boxes and in view of that it could take up to a year to entirely process. After the collection is processed a finding aid, which catalogs the collection and summarizes it, is drafted and placed online. This document is a useful tool for our club. For example, if you want information on dilated cardiomyopathy, the inventory will direct you to the box and folder number related to this topic. This makes items easily identified and therefore more accessible to club members. You can view a finding aid online at www.akc.org/about/depts/archive/finding_aids.cfm to view how this will work.
I hope this will explain why it is a win win for DPCA to transfer our archives to AKC.

I regret to inform the membership that our longtime friend and fancier Judy Doniere passed away last evening after fighting a long running battle with cancer. Judy was a good friend and she and I talked often about our various paths along the road to battle. I will miss her as will all of DPCA.

April 30th, 2009 | Category: President's Message To the membership:
Due to problems that were encountered with the Pipeline it has been brought to my attention that two publishing errors have occurred. The first one is being corrected here because they both are important. The second will follow later. This one involved “Fritz” the Felton Award Recipient and was not reported in the winter issue and was inadvertently left out of the current issue through no fault of anyone involved as it was submitted on time. These things do happen. Please enjoy reading about Fritz. The second part is Pam DeHetre’s report which I will get out shortly.
Thanks

Another wonderful acknowledgement of Doberman PR goes out to Pete and Patty Fiordimondo of St. Louis, Missouri. Their dog, Fritz, adopted from Midwest Doberman Rescue, was the recipient of the 2008 Fellton Award. Patty writes about Fritz, in part:
“Fritz was a stray in East St. Louis, IL at a kill shelter and Midwest Doberman Rescue got a call telling him if they wanted him they could come and get him. They did. My husband and I had Doberman experience so we thought we’d maybe look this time for the ‘challenging guy’…. Shortly after we got Fritz, my husband had to have back surgery. When my husband came home from the hospital, I worried that Fritz would knock him down or jump on him. Pete, my husband had to walk around the house as recovery and Fritz would walk gently and slowly beside him. Then, I knew that he was different….
Fritz’s first job was to donate blood at the St. Louis Animal blood bank. He was very good, never minding all the needles…Fritz earned his TT…his CGC…and then added TDI…. Fritz also has his VCC … and VCCX …was a therapy dog at St. John’s Medical Center and…now visits the patients at St. John’s Rehabilitation Center in Chesterfield, MO.
Every year, Fritz works at the AKC Museum of the Dog at Summer Camp for Kids. He is a great ambassador for the breed, handsome and very sweet. Kids get to learn about dogs, dog safety, caring for dogs and then the kids get to pet him…the kids petting him is his favorite part. No child leaves the building without a Fritz Kiss! Fritz also won Courageous Canine of 2005 from the Animal Protective Association for all his hard work he does throughout the year.
I…recently became a Canine Good Citizen evaluator and Fritz is my ‘test dog.’ Fritz’s job [is] to meet other dogs and my job to see if those dogs have manners in public with humans and animals….Fritz…teaches our fosters how to be dogs. ”
Congratulations to Patty, Pete, and Fritz! Thank you for setting such a great example of what rescued Dobermans can accomplish.

March 19th, 2009 | Category: President's Message As many of you have read the board passed a motion to approve the new web site. Thanks to the hard work of Gudi Molinari and Michelle Kramer this has come to fruition. Michele has informed me that the new site should be up and running late on Wednesday 3/18 or by Thursday morning 3/19. That is the plan. As always plans don’t always work out, but we believe that it will. It is possible that there may be a a down time of up to 2 hours during the transition where you will not be able to enter the site.
This new site has been a huge undertaking, and we should all be thankful that these two volunteers have put in the time and effort to serve this club at NO COST to any of us. As you know, Gudi has been maintaining the web site for as long as it has been in existence. She has asked at this time that Michelle take over the day to day maintenance as web master and Gudi will remain as the chair of the internet committee so that she can help with suggestion and recommendations regarding content. Michelle is well qualified for this job as she was directly involved with the Centennial Site last year.
I encourage all of you to visit the site and look it over. As always some of it will be a work in progress, and we will continue to add and make improvements as time goes by. If you see something you like, PLEASE let Gudi and Michelle know. IF you don’t like something do the same and copy me. Suggestions for betterment and more useful information will be appreciated as the web site is our main link with you and the internet community.
Enjoy,
Sam F. Burke,Jr., M.D.
