The DPCA Officers and Board of Directors voted to cancel the 2020 National at the June 16, 2020 Board meeting. We are sharing a short summary of the information used to make the decision. The survey results, the ad hoc committee report and a complete list of concerns raised by Board members are posted below.
The Board formed an ad hoc committee to conduct a feasibility study on the possibility of holding an “abbreviated” National. Abbreviated in the sense that all Convention activities that required people to be in close proximity for extended periods of time were cancelled. These activities include, but are not limited to, seminars, meetings and specific social gatherings. The study looked at three major areas of concern:
- Safety
- Financial viability
- Attendance
Safety: The committee followed the recommendations of the CDC and the AKC in creating a set of guidelines for the Show Site. Any National events and functions that called for close social contact were cancelled in the proposal.
Financial Viability: The National Show Committee negotiated the removal of contractual guarantees related to the National Convention and was able to secure significant reductions in expenses related to the National. With those reductions, a fiscally viable event is possible if entries reach 60% of the 2019 entries.
Attendance: Thank you to the 590 people that responded to the attendance survey. 211(35.9%) replied they would attend, 132(22.5%) replied maybe and 244(41.6%) replied no. Typically, between 350 to 400 members attend the National. Based on the survey, attendance equated to 60% of those who normally attend.
After reviewing the proposal, the Board had three areas of concern:
- Concerns about the ability to maintain a safe environment for the attendees
- Given the constantly changing Covid 19 restrictions at the state level, there was too much uncertainty about the potential for a last minute cancellation that could result in penalties of $184,000 or more.
- Concerns about attendance given travel and quarantine restrictions imposed by the state of Kansas.
In the best interest of the DPCA, the Board decided not to move forward with the abbreviated proposal. It was a difficult decision to cancel the National and it was not undertaken lightly. We do understand how important this event is.
